Thrived through the early 20th century during war times, it created an aspirational or dream like goal for the people back home while the men were at war

​Application of theory: Representation (Stuart Hall)
  • The idea that representation is the production of meaning through language, with language defined in its broadest sense as a system of signs.
  • The idea that the relationship between concepts and signs is governed by codes
  • The idea that stereotyping, as a form of representation, reduces people to a few simple characteristics or traits
  • The idea that stereotyping tends to occur where there are inequalities of power, as subordinate or excluded groups are constructed as different or ‘other’ (e.g. through ethnocentrism).

​Application of theory: Identity (David Gauntlett)
  • The idea that the media provide us with ‘tools’ or resources that we use to construct our identities.
  • The idea that whilst in the past the media tended to convey singular, straightforward messages about ideal types of male and female identities, the media today offer us a more diverse range of stars, icons and characters from whom we may pick and mix different ideas.

Application of theory: Gender Performativity (Judith Butler)
  • The idea that identity is performatively constructed by the very ‘expressions’ that are said to be its results (it is manufactured through a set of acts).
  • The idea that there is no gender identity behind the expressions of gender.
  • The idea that performativity is not a singular act, but a repetition and a ritual.

​The representations feel less constructed and therefore more real. She makes a real effort to keep her vlogs as authentic and ‘real’ as they can be, showing all of her life rather than just the positive aspects. 

With it being a self-representation there is obviously a sense of biasness as she is unlikely to present herself in a negative light. However she is representing herself as the way she would like to be portrayed.

EXAM QUESTION: Attitude and Zoella

Clay Shirky argues that audiences in today’s online age are no longer passive consumers of media content.  How far is this true of online audiences ? 
 
Nowadays; the online audience is mostly teenagers behind their screen commenting on content creators social platforms like Twitch, Instagram, Youtube. The main social platform where the most interactions happen between the fans and the content creator is Twitter.
There are a lot of PROSUMERS online which mean that active consumers can then make their own videos and then influence their consumers that spark new views and opinions which will then create a fued or rivalry between major fandoms. This supports the argue that audiences today are no longer passive consumers of media content.

PSI (Parasocial interactions) forming a friendship with a content creator and having the viewer feel as if they've experienced everything that their favourite content creator has been through; highs and lows because they have tuned into all of their vlogs. 

Attitudes target audience which is people from the LGBTQ community are not really seen as passive consumers as of lately due to the fact that they have been targeted by many online factors addressing their situation. The gay community are often targeted by big brands like playstation trying to normalise

Money can be a factor in the production of digital media content and how accessible it is to consumers 
- Younger audience can have a chance to view the newspaper allowing them to also share their thoughts creating a more active audience and having more data. Biometrics are on all social media apps so that the ads that are shown have relevance. 

-Producers are the products for companies like YouTube. Having an active audience that likes, and views the creators content like Zoella for example generate money towards YouTube. Having that active audience helps companies make money so the idea of 'liking, subscribing, sharing etc' is pushed onto viewers forcing them in a way to become active consumers.

Audience behaviour has changed due to the internet and the ability for audiences to create their own content at home thanks to the lower cost of technology. This new audience doesn't just consume media, but also produces it – creating the term 'prosumer'.

CRIME DRAMA

 Genre/ Crime Dramas

Crime dramas usually follow a main detective who is on a hunt to catch someone - usually a murderer. Throughout the drama there would be red herrings and hints dropped to trick the audience and keep them on edge. The killers identity would will often be revealed at the end of the series. 

Nordic Crime Drama

The Enigma Code is simply a theory that suggests a text (whether that can be television, film or a poster) portrays a mystery to draw an audience in. ... This allows the audience to pose questions and as such become intrigues in the piece.

Action Codes are common in crime dramas, for example the slow-mo scenes that build a lot of tension

Life on Mars

How far might audiences respond differently to representations in the set episode of The Bridge? Refer to Stuart Hall's reception theory.
Audiences would respond differently to how The Bridge represents the set episode due to many different factors. The cultural theorist, Stuart Hall, explored how people make sense of media texts and claimed audiences were active not passive. An active audience engages, interprets and responds to a media text in different ways and is capable of challenging the ideas encoded in it.

The Statement of Aims +blurb

 MEDIA SoA

In my work, I will be focusing on making the main character "the protagonist" the focal point of all ads and promotional work for the television programme which will be airing on E4. I will distribute the media online so it can reach the desired target audience that is teens to adults, around 12-30, that enjoy the natural humour that I will aim for. The show will reflect the essence of other British television programmes that air on E4. The mode of address that I will use to communicate to my audience in promotional work and that would suit my audience will be informal because the genre of the film is comedy and most of the lines will be played as jokes. 

I will be using Adobe Photoshop to create the DVD/Poster cover art. The DVD cover will show the main character “Protagonist" standing in the middle looking at the camera to show that he knows that he is going to be the main character, and to let the audience know that this character is aware that his life is a television show (which he does know by breaking the fourth wall). I will make the title the same for both poster and DVD which is a big red title with the word "THE PROTAGONIST".  I will choose to make the art for the title big and red to show the boldness that the protagonist thinks of himself. On the back of the DVD I will put the blurb above different images that will be thumbnails of screenshots, my name and the other people that did help with any part of creating the final product will be on the back swell as the stars who will have their names on the front cover as well from the final production. On the spine of the DVD box, will simply be the title "THE PROTAGONIST". along with the age rating which would be 12. Red is a primary colour and it will look better on a dark background which the Protagonist will emerge from in his signature red hoodie to outline his character traits, thinking he is the main character and should always stand out. I will also include "THE ANTAGONIST" which is another character who will be the protagonist's unintended rival. He will appear to the side of him to show that he is not the main character. And I decided to make a subtle joke on the DVD art by putting the third character on the left which is the Protagonist again to give the idea that the show will definitely be about him, meaning he is both main and side character at the same time. The protagonist will take up a bigger portion of the print because he is the main character of his own world and to portray that to the audience I will make it so that he shows dominance.

I will shoot the video with the protagonist being in the majority of the scenes to make sure he gets as much screen time. The protagonist character will also have the ability to communicate through to the audience. I will edit the production in final cut pro (or another program similar) to make edits and add sound, music, and other visual effects. Even by cutting and slicing different clips together to speed up the pacing of the short.




BLURB 

Living the life of any other teenager in South London, searching for a purpose, a reason to get up out of that single bed everyday. The Protagonist of his own life purposely looks for a reason to go out and find something to do, even if it there is nothing at all to even do. Although The Protagonist doesn't have the super powers he's always wanted he never quits to further prove to himself that he IS the best. 

After the Protagonist wakes up from bed he heads to the park because he gets a mysterious text from someone on his phone. Join the Protagonist as he prepares for battle against his unforeseen foe.
